On Thursday 2nd February 2017, a group of CORE participants attended the Belfast MET’s Open Day. The group was accompanied by Christine Cosgrove, the Employer and Education Support Officer and Diane McGreevy a CORE Mentor.
Most of the group would not have considered going to FE college as they did not see a return to education as possible in their circumstances. Some felt that college was not a place for them and they said they were concerned that it would be either “just like school” or too advanced for them to cope with. However their attitudes changed once they attended the Titanic Quarter Campus of Belfast MET. They were able to attend a range of information session across a wide range of vocational areas and following these there was an opportunity to meet with Belfast MET’s Careers Support & registration team to discuss potential progression pathways into Further Education.
As a result of the day, 5 of our CORE participants (all aged from 16 -24) have now registered to take up FE, by attending the Belfast MET. The areas of training they plan to commence study in include; Childcare, Sport Studies, Business Administration, & Barbering. As part of their studies they will also be completing their Essential Skills, English, Math’s & ICT. So, a wide range of areas of study!
The CORE Team are delighted and wish all of these participants well, as then get ready for their move into further education!
